Why be an achievement whore?

I’ve been reading a number of blog entries, and replies to blogs, talking about cleaning up some achievements before moving on to the next game or before getting into a backlog. BigRed and I are doing our best to work through our backlogs and I’m sure that he’ll agree that it’s time consuming enough to just beat a game, let alone trying to get a platinum trophy or 1000 achievement points. If you’ve got a huge backlog, you clearly aren’t hurting for money. When we were all younger gamers, we would play a game until every item was found and every quest conquered. That was because we all lacked the money for games or because we just didn’t have that many games. Today, most of us gamers are a little older and have careers that afford us the luxury of having a backlog. There’s really no point in playing a game to 100% after you’ve already beaten it if you have a backlog. Whittle down that list before you revisit a game. I can’t think of the last game that I’ve gone back to replay after I’ve beaten it since Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid. I love Red Dead Redemption and I keep telling myself that I’m going to go back into the game and beat the missions that I didn’t before and also to play through the Zombie DLC, but I have such a great stack of games that I’m dying to get into that I just can’t justify putting in a game I’ve already beaten.
